Developing a smartphone app with rheumatoid arthritis patients

We’re delighted to announce that, following a development period which included co-design with patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), we’re now up and running with the first version of the REMORA (REmote MOnitoring of Rheumatoid Arthritis) smartphone app for our study participants to test. We’re involving patients, the public, clinicians, managers, IT staff and researchers to develop REMORA, an app which allows patients to log RA symptoms regularly between appointments. The information is sent to the patient’s electronic hospital record via an NHS server at the University of Manchester (where REMORA was developed), where treating clinicians can access the data to inform the patients consultations. The final outcome will be a fully developed smartphone app and a toolkit that will inform the implementation of similar remote monitoring projects across the NHS. On 21 March 2016 we held a clinic to introduce REMORA to our first eight study participants so that they could test it with live data. They’ve been answering questions within the app to capture their daily, weekly and monthly wellbeing in relation to their RA by inputting data on things such as their pain, symptoms and impact on day-to-day activities. Our first testing period came to an end on 18 April 2016 when we met with all of our participants and discussed their experiences of using REMORA. We’re using their feedback, along with the captured data, to implement changes and improvements before our next round of testing commences in July 2016 with a larger cohort of 24 patients.
