Helping people stay in good health when looking after someone towards the end of life: project to summarise and report current knowledge

Do you have current or past experience of supporting a family member, partner, friend or neighbour towards the end of their life?

Do you feel able to help with an important project which will draw on your experiences?

This project at the University of Manchester will look at ways to help people to stay in good health and be supported more effectively when they are looking after someone towards the end of life. It will gather evidence on, summarise, and report what is known about the things that affect people’s psychological health when providing such end of life support.

We know that many family members, partners, neighbours and friends find themselves in the role of being a ‘carer’, and that they give invaluable unpaid care and support for those nearing the end of their lives.  We are now looking for people with such experience to become members of our advisory panel to make sure that we take account of carers’ experiences and views throughout the project.

We are initially seeking 5 carers to join our Review Advisory Panel (RAP).  This Panel will also include members involved in research and healthcare provision.

We plan to hold 6 advisory panel meetings over an 18 month period. The meetings should last 3-4 hours (with lunch included) and will be held at the University of Manchester. These meetings will be used to discuss the existing research on this matter, how we summarise our findings from the research, recording the views of the carer group members, and thinking through how best we might share our findings. Members of the RAP will be paid for their time at the rates recommended by INVOLVE* (£12.50-£20 per hour depending on the task required). All travel costs, together with the costs of providing care cover, will also be reimbursed.

If you think you might be eligible to become a carer member of the Review Advisory Panel and would like to find out more, please follow this link, or contact Peter Mellor at peter.mellor@srft.nhs.uk or by telephone on 07753310091.

* INVOLVE is a national advisory group that supports patient and public involvement in research
