Impaired Glucose Tolerance Care Call nominated for two awards

Congratulations to the GM CLAHRC and Salford diabetes team whose IGT Care Call project has been recognised, once more, for preventing type 2 diabetes in people with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).

After recognising the positive outcomes achieved at six months, local commissioning groups recommended that participants who completed the six month telephone lifestyle intervention programme be followed up longer term to ascertain if the beneficial effects were maintained.

The 12 month results are equally encouraging and have resulted in the project being selected as a finalist for two awards: the Care Integration Award - Diabetes Category and the Patient Safety Award - Primary Care Category. In the near future, a presentation to explain the project in more detail will be given before a panel of judges and the winners will be announced in July 2013.

This success provides further exposure for the project after it was recognised in a presentation at the Diabetes UK professional conference 2013. The presentation, delivered by Doctor Tom Yates, Senior Lecturer in Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour and Health at Leicester Diabetes Centre, University of Leicester, was titled “Translation of a diabetes prevention programme into practice: lessons learnt”. IGT Care Call was included as one of the broad range of examples and strategies for diabetes prevention work currently being undertaken in the UK.

A poster designed by Linda Savas, Katherine Grady and Sarah Cotterill demonstrating six and 18 month results of the IGT Care Call project was showcased at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust’s Technology and Innovation conference in April 2013.
