Kidney injury prevention card delivered to Salford pharmacists and GPs

A sick day rules card, listing medicines that should be temporarily stopped during illness to avoid AKI, has been delivered to 47 practices and 59 pharmacies in NHS Salford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

Working with NHS Salford CCG and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust (SRFT), we launched the patient safety card earlier this year to help patients understand which medicines they should stop taking when they’re ill to avoid acute kidney injury (AKI).

Illness (being sick or having diarrhoea or fever) can be a real risk for people taking some medicines. This sick day rules patient information card, originally developed by NHS Highland, helps address this problem by listing the medicines that should be temporarily stopped during illness to avoid AKI, a syndrome which affects one in five emergency hospital admissions. The card helps people to keep their kidneys healthy.

The card will primarily be distributed to patients through pharmacies and GP practices. Pharmacies and practices have been asked to give a card to every patient taking any of the medicines listed on the card.
