Launch of patient safety card to help prevent acute kidney injury

In partnership with NHS Salford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust (SRFT), we’ve launched a patient safety card about stopping certain medicines during sick days to avoid acute kidney injury (AKI). What’s the problem? Illness (vomiting, diarrhoea and fever) can be a significant risk for people taking certain medicines. A 'medicine sick day rules' patient information card, originally developed by NHS Highland, has been launched to address this problem and lists the medicines that should be temporarily stopped during illness to avoid AKI, a syndrome which affects one in five emergency hospital admissions. The recent Think Kidneys 2014 survey reported one of their headline findings as being that “as a massive generalisation, people don’t have a comprehensive understanding of what their kidneys do, how to keep them healthy, or what acute kidney injury is”. These cards will help people to keep their kidneys healthy. Pharmacies and practices are asked to give a card to every patient receiving any of the medicines listed on the card. What is your role? If you are a Salford-based GP, pharmacist, practice nurse or practice manager you have a key role in distributing the card and helping patients to better manage their medicines when ill. Please contact Lorraine Burey, Project Manager, if you would like some cards or would like more information. This project is part of our wider kidney health programme, made up of several closely aligned projects aiming to develop and evaluate a whole systems approach to improve the identification and management of kidney health.
