Smartphone app study wins Patients as Partners award

This study involves developing a smartphone app which allows patients to log rheumatoid arthritis symptoms regularly between appointments. The researchers are exploring how the app could help patients to self-manage their arthritis, doctors to give better care and researchers to understand more about the causes and frequency of disease flares.

The app developed as part of the REMORA study was co-designed by people with arthritis. In addition, the researchers met with their patient and public involvement group throughout the study to help guide the research.

Public and patient involvement

Our strategic focus to 2020 is to put people with arthritis at the heart of everything we do. This includes listening to, and involving, them in all aspects of our work. People with arthritis ensure that the research we fund is the most relevant to them.

To ensure that our researchers have the skills and understanding to involve patients in their research in a meaningful way, we run training workshops on patient involvement and communication for our researchers. For more information or to register for the next session, please contact patientinsight@arthritisresearchuk.org

To complement this training, we have our new handbook, Patient and Public Involvement – a Researcher’s Guide (PDF 8.2 MB) which contains lots of useful resources, including guidance on how to meaningfully involve people with arthritis, and case studies.
