Setting the agenda for end-of-life research in Greater Manchester
Today, Thursday 4 February 2016, we held a workshop with healthcare professionals to help shape future work in end-of-life care. Our team has already been working closely with patients and carers to find out what they think the important issues are when thinking about care at the end-of-life, and today it was the turn of healthcare staff to give us their views.
10 key priority areas have already been identified through a national piece of work by the Palliative and end of life care Priority Setting Partnership (PeolcPSP), but we’re keen to understand what matters most to patients, family carers and healthcare professionals at a local level.
Healthcare professionals took part in aspeed networking session to get to know one another.
Doing this work will ensure that we have a number of priority areas for end-of-life research that we and other organisations can work on in the near future. The main output of this project will be a report on priority areas for end-of-life research in Greater Manchester that the whole locality can share. We’ll also develop collaborations for our work moving forward, helping to define focus for our end-of-life programme for the next three years.
Dr Dai Roberts, Health and Implementation Team Programme Development Lead at Greater Manchester Academic Health Science Network, said: “Palliative and end-of-life care is an under-researched area that needs more attention. There are so many unanswered questions that we should be investigating and, with limited resources, it’s vital that we work on end-of-life priority setting to bring direct and tangible benefits to local patients and their carers, families and friends. Today’s workshop was a great way to ensure we make progress in this area.”

The workshop kicked off with an introduction to our end-of-life programme of work, before all of the attendees broke off into smaller groups to discuss what they think the priorities in end-of-life care research should be. The information gathered at this workshop will be analysed alongside the data we collect from carers, with the aim of looking for areas where priorities overlap so that we can define our work going forward. A full report on the findings is due in Summer 2016.
