The importance of Acute Kidney Injury care

Dr Tom Blakeman, a GP Clinical Research Fellow working on our People with Long Term Conditions (Patients) Research theme, has written an editorial for the British Journal of General Practice.

The article looks at the importance of identifying Chronic Kidney Disease in primary care and discusses its association with acute kidney injury (AKI).

Tom explained: “Acute Kidney Injury is a syndrome that is common, harmful yet preventable. This article outlines reasons for focusing on AKI. It also highlights the need for a more systematic approach to identifying and managing people at risk of AKI, clinical assessment of volume status and management of people with acute illness, and patient involvement in decision making.”

Tom is involved in exploring the integration of an informational strategy for supporting self-care within the health service and within peoples’ everyday lives.
