Salford Complex Glomerulonephritis Service
What did we try to do?
We did a service evaluation of the Salford Complex Glomerulonephritis Service.
Salford is the only site in the UK with a dedicated generalised glomerulonephritis (GN) clinic. In this study, we aimed to show the benefits to patients and the NHS of having more complex GN services in the UK.
Why was this important?
Glomerulonephritis (GN) is a group of diseases that injure the part of the kidney that filters blood called the glomeruli.
Although there were 54 sites with some kind of GN service across the UK, each centre tended to concentrate on one area, for example, transplant or chronic kidney disease (CKD). So, after seeing a patient, nephrologists would discuss the patient’s case with specialist clinicians to help make decisions on their treatment and care.
The challenge with the rare diseases C3 glomerulopathy (C3G), IgA nephropathy (IgA) and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), was that they are difficult to manage, with only a few nephrologists nationally that could do this without additional support. There were also very few consultants who knew which pathways or networks to use for support.
How did we do it?
In this service evaluation, we:
- Mapped the Salford Royal complex Glomerulonephritis (GN) service so we knew exactly what it could and could not do.
- Proved the value of a complex GN service through the development of a ‘value proposition’ that explained the benefits to patients and to the NHS.
- Shared the findings nationally with other Renal Services to address inequalities that exist for patients with a GN diagnosis.
