Internship Programme

The purpose of CLAHRC GM’s  internships is to provide an introduction to research. The internships comprise of 30 days over six to nine months and provide interns with the opportunity, resources and time to develop key research skills and a piece of work which can be used in service following the internship. The programme provides a range of both taught and academically supervised interventions to engage and expose the intern to the clinical academic research environment and provide them with the relevant practical skills to undertake a research project supported by an expert clinical academic supervisor.

Developing research skills and promoting research in clinical practice, helps interns to decide whether they wish to pursue a career in research, and enhance their ability to apply for further formal research training. This development is achieved through: test

  • experience of clinical academic research within the NIHR CLAHRC Greater Manchester;
  • supervision;
  • a structured educational programme;
  • access to electronic resources.

During the internship, interns will have introductions to formulating research questions, identifying appropriate research designs, searching and reviewing literature, conducting research and presentation.

CLAHRC GM has funded three cohorts of internships with a total of twenty students. Four of these students have been awarded places on the Masters in Clinical Research and research topics include:

  • End of life

  • Stroke

  • Patient involvement

  • Psychological aspects of care

  • Wound care

Skills gained by completing the internship have assisted students to; present at conferences, implement changes in practice, publish articles, gain promotion at work.
